Hier stehen die häufigsten Fragen. Bleibt etwas offen, schreib mir an justsplit@markus-kaemmerer.de.

Was heißt das?

Was kostet Just Split?

Was geht noch?

Öffne Just Split, um Just Split Pro zu holen.“

Just Split: Help and Contact

Here are the most common questions. If something is still unclear, write to me at justsplit@markus-kaemmerer.de. I built Just Split and read every message myself.

Choosing and splitting a video

How do I choose another video?

Tap the Photos symbol at the bottom left, next to the big button, or swipe up on the video. Your videos appear as in Photos; a tap takes one. With “Search in Photos” you find videos by people, places or things.

Why doesn’t the app take my newest video?

It takes the newest video by recording date and skips screen recordings and the parts it saved itself. A video you chose yourself stays chosen, even if you record something new meanwhile; the one you split last stays too, while its finished parts are ready. If you gave the app access to selected photos only, it sees only those. To get your newest video at any time, touch and hold the app icon and choose “Split Latest Video”.

How do I join several videos?

In your videos, tap “Select” at the top right, then tap the videos in the order they should play; the number shows it. “Continue” joins them, and the app splits them like one video. If they have different formats, the video shows “Different formats · re-rendered”.

Why so many parts?

The app makes as many parts as needed so that none is longer than the length you chose, and no more. A video of 2:10 at 60 seconds gives three parts, because two aren’t enough. You choose the length above the big button: 15, 30, 60 or 90 seconds. For another one, set a custom length in Settings.

Which length should I take?

WhatsApp Status shows up to 90 seconds, Instagram Story up to 60 seconds per part. At 60 seconds, the default, the parts fit both.

Why aren’t the parts exactly the same length?

A video can only be cut losslessly at certain places, in iPhone videos about every second. The app picks the places closest to equal lengths, and quiet ones if it can; differences of a second are normal. If you’d rather have full parts and the rest at the end, turn off “Equal parts” in Settings.

The app says “re-rendered”. What does that mean?

Usually Just Split only copies your video, without re-encoding it. It has to encode anew when you join videos in different formats (“Different formats · re-rendered”), and when a 4K video is scaled down for WhatsApp Status or Instagram Story (“Scaled down for the target”). That takes longer, and the app tells you first. “Share …” and “Save to Photos” get the parts at full size.

What about slo-mo and Cinematic videos?

For these the app shows a switch at the top left. When it’s on, Photos first renders the effect (“Photos is rendering the effect”), then the video is split losslessly. When it’s off, the app splits the recording as it is stored: right away, but without the effect. You set the default with “Cinematic and slo-mo with effect” in Settings.

My video is in landscape.

Just Split leaves the picture as it is and crops nothing; the cards show such parts whole, on black. How Status and Story show them is up to WhatsApp and Instagram.

Passing the parts on

How do the parts get into my Status or Story?

Tap the big button, for example “Split into 4 parts”. The app then shows the parts and, below them, “Send to”. Tap “WhatsApp Status”, then choose WhatsApp and “My Status” in the share sheet. For “Instagram Story”, choose Instagram, then your story. A checkmark shows where the parts have gone already.

Can I send one part on its own?

Yes. Each card has buttons for Instagram and WhatsApp at the top right, if that app is on your iPhone. Instagram opens its story with this part right away (for parts up to 60 seconds); WhatsApp comes through the share sheet. A checkmark shows which part is there already.

WhatsApp or Instagram is missing from the share sheet.

If “Save parts to Photos” is on, the parts are in Photos already; otherwise tap “Save to Photos” under “Send to”. Then pick them in WhatsApp or Instagram: they are at the top with your newest videos, in the right order.

Parts, undo and cleaning up

Where are the parts?

In Photos, at the top with your newest recordings, when “Save parts to Photos” is on (the default). The app also keeps the parts of the video you split last until you split the next one, for three days at most, so you can send them again without splitting anew. The button then reads, for example, “Show the 4 finished parts”. This copy isn’t part of your backup.

Can I undo a split?

Yes, the last one: swipe left on the video, shake your iPhone, or touch and hold the big button and choose “Undo Split”. The app then deletes the parts it just saved from Photos; the app and iOS ask you first. Parts you changed in Photos meanwhile stay.

Does the app delete anything?

Only if you want it to, and only parts it saved itself and that you didn’t touch: not edited, not marked as favorite, not hidden, not put in an album. It never touches your original, and it no longer offers parts older than 30 days. iOS asks you before deleting, and deleted parts stay in “Recently Deleted” for 30 days.

When the app asks, you set under “Clean Up” in Settings: “Ask next time”, “Ask after sharing” or “Off”; “Clean Up Parts …” cleans up right away. When the app shows, for example, “3 old parts in Photos”, tap “Clean Up …”, or ✕ to keep these parts; it won’t ask about them again.

Trimming, Shortcuts and iCloud

Can the app trim the start and end where nobody speaks?

Yes. Tap the scissors at the top left. The app recognizes on your iPhone where the speaking starts and ends, and splits only that stretch, without re-encoding. The timeline shows what is left out, and the top shows, for example, “Trimmed: 3 s at the start · 2 s at the end”. Your original stays as it is. The app recognizes the language your iPhone is set to.

The app asks to load speech recognition.

To trim, it needs Apple’s speech recognition for your language. With “Load”, iOS gets it once; it then stays on your device and works offline. “Not Now” turns trimming off again. If there is none for your language, the app shows “No speech recognition for … · nothing trimmed”.

Does it work with Shortcuts or Siri?

Yes. In the Shortcuts app there is “Split Latest Video”: it opens Just Split with your newest video, with a length per part if you like. And “Split Video”: it takes a video and returns the checked parts, without opening Just Split. Ask Siri to “Split my latest video with Just Split”. Touch and hold the app icon for “Split Latest Video”, “Choose Videos” and, while there are finished parts, “Show Finished Parts”.

The video is in iCloud and doesn’t load.

The app downloads it and shows how far it is (“Downloading from iCloud” with a percentage); the preview already plays meanwhile. Without a connection it says “No connection. The video is in iCloud.”; if nothing comes for a while, “iCloud stopped responding.”; both times with “Try Again”. It’s safest to keep the app open until the video has loaded. If that doesn’t help, open the video once in Photos and try again.

Price and purchase

What does Just Split cost?

You can try everything free: your first 10 videos, and at least 14 days from your first split. The trial ends only when both are used up. The same video again within a day doesn’t count again. After that there is “Just Split Pro”, a one-time purchase, no subscription, no ads: “Buy Pro” in Settings. How much of the trial is left is shown there under “Just Split Pro”.

The trial has ended. What still works?

The app keeps showing your video and its parts as a preview; to split, you need Just Split Pro. Parts that are finished already you can still send. The Shortcuts action “Split Video” then says “The trial has ended. Open Just Split to get Just Split Pro.”

I bought Pro, but the app doesn’t know.

Tap “Restore Purchases” under “Just Split Pro” in Settings. The purchase is valid for your Apple Account, on every iPhone and iPad signed in with it. If the app finds none, it says “No purchase found for this Apple Account.” If it says “The purchase is waiting for approval.”, someone has to approve it first, for example with Ask to Buy in your family.

Data and reporting a problem

Does the app collect data?

No. Your videos stay on your device until you pass them on yourself. The app removes location data from the parts while “Remove location” is on (the default). The details are in the privacy policy.

Report a problem

If the app stops or does something wrong, tap “Report a Problem …” under “About Just Split” in Settings; some messages also have the button right below them. The app opens an email to me with two questions to answer (“What happened?”, “What did you expect?”), plus app and iOS version, the device, your settings, the message and technical details of the chosen video (length, format, how it is split); you see everything and send it yourself. The app never attaches a video. If no mail account is set up, it copies my address. If a video would help me, I’ll ask in my reply.
